- Those interested in taking part in the contest shall upload pictures taken by themselves of Special Areas of Conservation (in Spanish Zonas Especiales de Conservación) in Spain and with an associated code of the Natura 200 network as documented in the listings. Images can correspond to two categories: landscapes (including individual trees, if it is a natural monument) and macro/close-up (animals, plants, fungi).
- The images shall be uploaded in the media repository of Wikimedia Commons.
- Images shall have a free license. The allowed licenses are[1]:
- Creative Commons – Attribution – ShareAlike 4.0 (recommended) or the former version 3.0
- Creative Commons – Atribución 4.0 (recommended) or the former version 3.0
- Creative Commons - Public Domain
- The purpose is to have comprehensive lists of all protected natural sites of all participating countries in the different Wikipedias, and images of them to illustrate the encyclopedia, providing so a complete and unique vision of the natural heritage of the organizing countries. Therefore we will value especially the first images of natural sites that had so far no picture in Wikimedia Commons or those illustrating the natural site in a way that was not available before (e.g. first images of a waterfall of the site).
- Images must be uploaded between July 1st and 31th 2024.
- Images will be reviewed by a jury throughout August, and at the end of the month the winners will be contacted by the organisation and the awarded pictures will be published.
- Those participating in the contest do accept these terms and the decisions that the organisation may take. In case of not fulfilling these terms the picture could be disqualified.
- If you have any questions, please, contact us here.
Terms of participation
- Participating is free or charge, without need of previous notice.
- Participation is open to all people interested without any restrictions of citizenship, country of residence or experience in photography.
- Participation is only possible as a particular person.
- All images must have been taken by the uploader and must be published with a free license as mentioned before.
- Images shall not have been published earlier in Wikimedia Commons, independently of the license used earlier.
- Images could have been taken months or years before the contest, only the upload throughout the month of July is required.
- Images shall be published with the highest possible quality and resolution. Minimal resolution is 2 megapixel (for example 1920x1080)
- Images shall not have a watermark, date, frame or other edited symbols (attribution to the author is done via the description page and not in the image).
- Photographed natural sites shall be included in the provided listings of the Wikimedia projects that can be found here.
- The natural site shall be identified via the code of the Natura 2000 network that is available in the listings. Therefore, natural sites without an identifier are not acceptable.
- There is no limit in the amount of photographs presented per user.
- In the unlikely case that a photograph does not meet any of the policies of Wikimedia Commons, it will not participate in the contest.[2]
Participation via Wikimedia Commons
- In order to participate via Wikimedia Commons, you will need to have an account there (learn here how).
- The pictures must be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons between July 1st 2024 00:00h (CEST)[3] and July 31st 23:59h 2024 (WEST).[4]
- The user shall have activated the email option in the preferences (under Preferences at the end of the section User profile), so that the organization of the contest can get in touch via a form sent to the email provided. This is the way to communicate with the contest winners.
- The photographs can be published via the upload wizard of Wiki Loves Earth, created to ease the participation in the contest. Alternatively, the pictures can be uploaded into Wikimedia Commons with any other tools the user is familiar with.
- If the pictures are not uploaded with the Wiki Loves Earth upload wizard, then the following code shall be included manually in the description page of each uploaded picture
{{Wiki Loves Earth
.2024
|es}} - The authors can withdraw the pictures, if desired, before the end of the contest (July 31th) just removing
{{Wiki Loves Earth
from the desciption page.2024
|es}} - The contest organization is entitled to withdraw any photograph of the contest (following the same procedure) —even before the end of the contest— in the case that the photograph is not aligned with the contest requirements (e.g. the natural site is not located in Spain, the picture does not depict a natural site or the identification is missing). The contest participant can re-include the picture in the contest if the problems reported by the organisation have been solved adding
{{Wiki Loves Earth
to the description page (there is no need to upload it again).[5]2024
|es}} - Special Area of Conservation identifier is added with help of the template LIC in the description field:
{{LIC|ES1234567}}
, e.g. adding{{LIC|ES0000044}}
the result would be like this. - It is responsibility of each participant to ensure that each photography is properly labeled.
- Note: if the images are uploaded from the listings in the Spanish Wikipedia, clicking on the camera icon on the right of the corresponding site, the SAC identifier along with a brief description of the site and the contest banner will be automatically added.
Evaluation
The criteria established to evaluate the contest photographs is the following:
- Technical quality
- Proper exposure
- Sharpness
- Lack of problems like lens distortions, noise, dust spots, JPEG artifacts, chromatic aberratioin or vignetting
- Composition (the monument captured is the main subject of the picture without distracting elements that draw the attention to other elements, especially, but not only, people)
- Optical beauty
- Encyclopedic value
Before participating
To make sure that your participation will be productive and the image will not be excluded later:
- Are you the author of the photograph? In that case, you are fine.
- Does the photograph show a natural site in Spain? E.g. pictures of the Alps could participate in the contest of other countries, but not in Spain.
- The picture has at least 2 Mpx? An approximate size of 1920x1080 is the minimum, smaller images like 800x600, 1600x1200 or 1200x720 are too small. The higher the resolution the better!
- Don't forget the SAC code! You can find it in the listings.
- The photographs must be free of watermarks, frames, dates, otherwise will be disqualified.
- Go ahead and good luck!
Notes
- ↑ Although these are the most frequent, it is allowed to use any other license accepted in Wikimedia Commons.
- ↑ Unlikely because it would also violate other of the conditions listed here.
- ↑ Continental time in Spain
- ↑ Canary Islands time
- ↑ Doing a new upload could actually cause an error, get it touch with the organization if you need help here.
